Bent Note: The Seed and the Song

It is the contradictions deep within us that give birth to humanity’s soul. The moment the words “we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men were created equal” were written was the moment that breathed life into America’s soul. Soul music, blues music, rock ’n’ roll, gospel music, all are the same defiant tree, its seed planted with those words.

Family we need to sit down and talk for a minute.

Writers are full of shit. That includes me. I can take solace in the fact that I have a sense of awareness of my own philosophical contradictions enough to know that my file full of flowery essays while full of grievances and sentiments I think you want to hear is perhaps exactly what you don’t want to hear. Perhaps what you, the reader, really want to hear is exactly what I, the writer, wish to conceal. Maybe I’m tired of this Substack game of performative pretense. Maybe our nation’s founding fathers were too.

This essay is the story I refused to tell. Years of research that should have become a book ended up buried under my own bad assumptions. They say: establish authority by flaunting expertise. I’ll establish mine by telling you where I was wrong.

The Declaration’s Hidden Verse

This essay is also about the story the forefathers buried. The Declaration almost joined the place where grand projects go when courage blinks and ego takes the wheel: the forget pile. What kept it breathing was one stubborn sentence: “all men are created equal.” It kept beating under their edits like a hidden drum, while the lines naming slavery were cut. Blues music took that backbeat and carried the truth they refused to print.

Somehow writing this maybe is a way to exorcise the demons of failure. Maybe these enlightened men, our founding fathers and make no mistake about it, they were the pinnacle of Enlightenment thinkers were, in writing the Declaration of Independence, not just making a stand against a tyrant king, but a stand against their own tyrannical proclivities.

The record is clear: southern delegates led by South Carolina and Georgia would not sign if Jefferson’s slavery indictment remained. They called it ruinous, incendiary, a knife in the contract. Remove it, or the South bolts.

All this over a passage written by Thomas Jefferson himself, the same man who later argued Black inferiority. His original clause read:

He has waged cruel war against human nature itself, violating its most sacred rights of life & liberty in the persons of a distant people who never offended him, captivating & carrying them into slavery in another hemisphere, or to incur miserable death in their transportation thither.

This piratical warfare, the opprobrium of infidel powers, is the warfare of the CHRISTIAN king of Great Britain.

Determined to keep open a market where MEN should be bought & sold, he has prostituted his negative for suppressing every legislative attempt to prohibit or to restrain this execrable commerce:

Confession: Authority by Error

Family, in this essay I’m attempting the exorcism of my own demons of writer procrastination and failure. The delegates, particularly those from southern states, perhaps got tired of what we might label today virtue signaling and just threw up their hands and said, “fuck it, Thomas, you want to feel good about your lofty ideals?” (imagine the delegates from Georgia and South Carolina using finger air quotes) “go ahead and say ‘all men were created equal,’ but people will know that *all men* surely doesn’t mean what you mean, Thomas.” Perhaps it was at this point they thought they had exorcised their own demons and the demons of a nation.

I just might have saved this book by confronting my own shortcomings. Jefferson, in confronting his own philosophical hypocrisies, just may have forced the nation to confront its own, even if delayed, and as a consequence help create the primordial soup that became a uniquely American form of expression: BLUES MUSIC.

The Ledger of All Men

You said all men, yet here I am still in bondage after the war against the king you said would keep me in chains. You said all men, yet after a war fought for freedom and the Union, my family is subject to terror at night by men in white sheets. You said all men, yet after a war fought against those espousing the supremacy of a master race, I must endure the indignity of “separate but equal,” which in fact is anything but equal.

These are the words I feel pressing through some invisible veil into my soul whenever I feel that whiff of doubt and hesitation at whether I should even write this. I’m not some ivory tower academic scholar, just a retired cop who saw the cold face of justice that was anything but blind. My blindness, while it did obscure my ability to connect the dots through history, the sound eventually made its way through into my soul and now I see.

Blues purists who swear by a “primitive Africa” origin and scold the church link, prepare to clutch those pearls; the roll call of singers who crossed from Sunday service to Saturday night is long.

Now, what is it that I now see and, most importantly, what caused me to see it? My kid asked me not too long ago where did R&B music come from. Hungry to avoid this long drawn-out “adult” discussion about slavery and racial prejudice in the Deep South, I just blurted out “gospel” as a deflection. Bam. End of story. I just avoided a conversation about the complicated and tragic origins of a complicated music by telling what I thought amounted to a gross oversimplification that was almost an outright lie. Or was it?

When the southern delegates, in that “fuck it” moment, canceled Jefferson’s original draft of “All men were created equal,” did they too believe that the all men are equal phrase was an oversimplification that almost amounted to a lie? When Sally Hemings—Jefferson’s slave and concubine—stared directly into the eyes of one of THE founding fathers and asked Jefferson if her Black children were just as worthy of a human existence unshackled by the chains of bondage, and he blurted out “yes,” was he then saying what he truly believed or was it too an oversimplification that amounted to a lie? Did Jefferson in that moment just say to himself “fuck it” and throw all his Enlightenment intellectual sophistry to the wind and decide to free her children—his children—while the rest of the nation’s free-labor stock remained in chains throughout the South?

The Choir and the Gospel Spine

That moment, the “fuck it” moment where abandonment precedes the truth, is a moment of revelation. The nation’s failure to live up to its ideals even after millions sacrificed their lives on the battlefield to settle it for once and for all is also a revelatory moment. Out of that very surrender, the “fuck it” that both reveals and conceals, came a different kind of author. Where the founders wrote, others would sing,

The Fisk Jubilee Singers were not a novelty choir; they were a Reconstruction miracle engineered out of necessity. Fisk University opened in 1866 under the American Missionary Association for newly freed people, but by 1871 the school was broke. George L. White who was a Union veteran turned treasurer and music teacher gathered nine students and put them on the road to keep the college alive. He named them the “Jubilee” Singers after Leviticus’s year of release, when debts are canceled and the enslaved go free. The name wasn’t branding; it was a theology of freedom set to breath.

They toured a hostile country that denied them lodging, mocked in the press and insisted on singing the very “slave songs” white audiences called uncultured. That refusal to perform minstrelsy changed American ears: spirituals like “Steal Away,” “Go Down, Moses,” and “Swing Low” entered concert halls and, with them, the memory of bondage carried in blue notes. The money they raised built Jubilee Hall, the first permanent building for Black higher education in the South, and their success eventually carried them to the White House and across Europe.

At the center was Ella Sheppard—pianist, arranger, assistant director, the matriarch who taught, tuned, and transcribed the songs. Her life carried the nation’s split inside it. As a child, her enslaved mother, Sarah, learned the mistress had turned little Ella into a spy; in despair she ran to the river to drown them both rather than see her daughter sold downriver. An elder woman stopped her. Years later Ella’s father purchased her freedom; Ella grew into the singer whose hands and ear would lift a people’s repertoire onto the world’s stage. That is the sound you hear in those arrangements: survival interrupting despair.

By 1873 the singers expanded and crossed the Atlantic; audiences who had never seen freed Black students on a major stage heard a music that was prayer and protest at once. The tours saved the school and revised the nation’s idea of “American” music. If Jefferson’s words taught the country to say liberty, the Jubilee Singers taught it how liberty feels—a lament turning toward hope until the phrase can stand.

Their revelatory moment came only after they faced the thing they’d been trained to avoid. Fisk University barely five years old, born in Army barracks and already broke—had sent a small choir on the road to save the school. George L. White named them “Jubilee” after the year of release, debts canceled, the enslaved set free. At the piano sat Ella Sheppard, arranger, assistant director, the woman whose mother, in despair, once ran to the river to drown them both rather than see her child sold downriver, and was stopped at the water’s edge. These spirituals were not museum pieces; they were ancestral utterances of hope and lament—call-and-response, moan and vow bending notes until joy and pain could live in the same breath. They called them spirituals; we later would call it soul.

When they abandoned the respectable and safe colder European-style hymns and anthems for their people’s cabin songs, the room changed. Tears fell first. Then the money. The repertoire that polite society had dismissed as “slave songs” paid the school’s debts and raised Jubilee Hall, a stone castle of learning rising from the place where wooden barracks once stood. The music didn’t just move audiences; it moved history.

The greatest leaps forward for humanity come when we stop purifying the outside and begin exorcising the inside. Animals can only fight what’s in front of them; humans carry the rare capacity to wrestle what’s within. The Jubilee Singers did that work by turning private terror into public prayer and in doing so taught a nation how to feel its own words. Jefferson was willing, I believe, to peer at his demons; like the country he midwifed, he did not finish. He left us holding the baggage with demons that spilled into fields and courthouses and left a million men dead, their echo still rattling the chambers of our modern discourse.

Blues music appears to reconcile this unfinished business by giving us a blueprint to exorcise our demons. Yes, my fellow blues purists and aficionados, the spirituals, the forerunner of gospel music, were the blues. The visceral emotional reactions of crowds before the Fisk Jubilee Singers bursting into tears at their emotionally driven spirituals not just in all-white venues in the Midwest but also in European countries with audiences who didn’t even understand the words attest to this American genre of music as being blues and not just an offshoot of blues.

My own moment of truth on this issue came not long after my dismissive “it came from gospel,” explanation blurted out to a child too young to understand the complexities.

In a synchronous call and response fashion it was as if the universe stepped in and chastised my arrogance posing as protection when the song by Natalie Cole, I’ve Got Love On My Mind, showed up on my YT feed and I hit play. Of course I had heard the song before, as this had been a mainstay on the Black stations I grew up on as a very young kid. But now it was as if my eyes had been blind up until that point and now I see. She kicked off the song with, “The Lord is blessing me…” What? That’s not in the original song. (It wasn’t. This was a live performance.) Maybe she was just a little tipsy on this performance and got confused with her gospel set. (She wasn’t; I found multiple live performances with the same phrase uttered.)

Any musician who has actually spent time on a stage and in any recording studio will be like, “OK, so what? R&B musicians routinely steal—uhm, I mean draw from the gospel music they grew up on as inspiration.” It’s why even the elders in the church back in the days before blues got its rhythm and jump beat decried it as the devil’s music—not because of its lyrical differences with the Lord’s music but because of its striking, indistinguishable similarities to the Lord’s music, which posed a threat to church dominance. It harkened back to the trope of the devil posing as an angel in disguise. A deeper analysis of “I’ve Got Love on My Mind” reveals not a devil posing as an angel but rather an angel posing as a mortal human.

And that’s the irony hiding in plain sight. Strip away the sequins and studio polish and “I’ve Got Love on My Mind” is a gospel service in street clothes. The rhythm rocks instead of struts; it sways like a congregation finding its footing after prayer. The piano walks the same little “home-and-back-home” path that every church accompanist plays when they want to keep the spirit moving. Each phrase lands on a soft “amen,” and the background voices answer her the way a choir answers the preacher. Even the way Natalie keeps repeating that one line—“I’ve got love on my mind”—is the church vamp, the moment you loop a truth until it becomes real.

The lyric just changes the addressee. On Sunday the singer would say Lord instead of lover, but the feeling, the reach, the surrender—it’s the same motion of the heart. That’s why it hits so deep: the song carries both sanctity and desire in one breath. It’s not the devil sneaking into the sanctuary; it’s the sanctuary stepping out into the world. In other words, not a devil disguised as an angel, but an angel walking among mortals, humming a love song that’s still a prayer.

What does a love ballad by Natalie Cole have to do with the Decleration of Independence? Everything. “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” reads like statute until a body risks tenderness. Love is the ordinary revolution. It refuses commodification and stitches personhood back together. The framers named the ends; our music rehearses the means. A love that endures bills and grief is the daily practice of liberty. When Natalie opens her mouth and the congregation answers, the republic remembers how to breathe. Happiness is belonging, safety, permission to open your throat and sing without penalty. That is constitutional.

This is why the sight of Barack and Michelle, hand in hand and smiling in spite of the weather of this country, made rooms exhale. In a nation that sold spouses across different blocks, Black love in public acts as argument and benediction. People cheered as a wound heard its name and felt a bandage. Somewhere the unclaimed dead and the families broken by bondage could look down and say, “Yes. We did it.” The ballad is a love story and a civic rehearsal, private tenderness carried into the square. That is the pursuit of happiness set to a backbeat, the chorus that keeps teaching America how to be what it promised.

Unclaimed: Toward Grace

I’m not an academic. I’m not an intellectual. I’m just a man who used to wear a badge and wake up every morning convinced he could keep a little corner of the world in order. Now I’m retired, and the ghosts come to visit—not the ones you’d expect. Not shoot-outs or high-speed chases, not the heavy, lingering reek of a dead body after a natural death call. Those fade.

The one that stays is a single name on a report from a nursing home, a woman whose body waited for someone to come claim it and no one did. I spent hours hunting through databases, calling old numbers, piecing a life together so she wouldn’t vanish without witness. When I finally found a granddaughter somewhere out of state, she couldn’t make the trip. So the woman went into the ground beneath a marker that simply read “unclaimed.” I told myself it was routine, just paperwork, but the truth is that name has been haunting me ever since. She deserved a song.

Maybe we all do. Maybe the blues was written for people like her, people quietly erased from the record. That’s what I hear now when I listen to the music I’ve been writing about: an entire nation of unclaimed souls still waiting for somebody to say their names out loud. Jefferson wrote “all men are created equal,” then left a woman he claimed to love and a people he enslaved unclaimed. That’s the country’s original missing-persons case, and the blues has been filing the report ever since.

I want to believe that somewhere beyond the noise and beyond the world of the living that woman heard what I couldn’t say in life: that I fought for her dignity, that I tried to be decent. I want to believe Sally Hemings can finally rest in a world where love doesn’t have to hide behind property laws. I want to believe Jefferson himself can see what his words became: both wound and medicine, both hypocrisy and hope. If the music teaches us anything, it’s that confession can still lead to grace.

So I pour a drink and put on Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On. I step away from the endless drumbeat of hate and let that bass line roll like a heartbeat. The horns rise like a prayer. For a few minutes the song does what my mouth can’t: it bridges the gap between who we are and who we keep saying we’ll be.

And under it I hear the country’s first bent note: a contradiction breathing a nation into being. We hold these truths… cut a groove the size of a promise, and every blues, gospel, soul record since has been the needle returning to it. That defiant tree you met at the start still drinks from the same sentence—all men are created equal—even when the wind tries to snap its limbs. Contradiction is the pressure that makes the note true. So we keep the record spinning, we keep loving past our fear, we keep reaching for life, for liberty, for the pursuit of a happiness wide enough for everyone. Until hate runs dry, let the needle find the old groove and teach us the harmony we owe each other. When the chorus comes around again, may we finally sing it in tune.

When it’s cold outside, what are you reading?

Let me talk about this woman of mine.

Y’all back me up, alright?

She says I ain’t got pages.

When I do, they’re late.

On time, and Stripe account is empty.

She points at other writers with tight structure, clean rollouts, book deals.

But I can’t be in two places at one time.

If you think you ain’t got nothing to read now, wait until tonight.

Relax. That wasn’t me running “authentic” game on you. Okay, a little Bobby in the cadence. Truth is I’m tired. I cannot use it as an excuse anymore. You show up at work even when you are tired, so I’m showing up for work here.

This isn’t a personal blog anymore. It’s community property. You own this. Paid or free, I work for you. Not some shadowy 1620 outfit. Not a sponsor breathing down my neck while I pretend I love a wack product because that bag of Benjamins looked pretty in my bank account.

I told my partner retirement meant more time with her. Then I wrote through the night. When I’m not writing, I’m worrying about what to write next. That can make a person feel alone when you’re three feet away. Bobby knew that curse. A voice big enough to fill a room and still leave someone lonely in the bed.

So here’s my vow tonight. Pages that come out of the closet, stand by your side, and follow you around the room. We’re reading Womack as policy felt at home, 1982 to right now.

The cover smiles like Sunday. Big glasses, pinstripes, a kid on his shoulders, a woman leaning in. Jet does what Jet does best: joy as evidence. The headline talks about bouncing back from tragedy and a stalled run. The picture says family anyway. You can feel the church in that grin. You can feel the grind in it too.

He came up poor enough to turn hunger into humor. As he joked, “the neighborhood was so ghetto that we didn’t bother the rats and they didn’t bother us.” That line isn’t just a laugh. It’s how you tell the truth without breaking the room. He learned that tone in the pews. Testify the wound. Sweeten it so people can carry it home. Guitar in the sanctuary. Harmony as a coping skill.

That mix is why blue-collar Black workers heard themselves in him. In ’81 the plants still ran. Not like the decade before, but the line was there. Overtime shrank. Shifts got choppy. You could still put in the work, and you felt the ceiling lowering. Church on Sunday. Locker room on Monday. A steward’s number in your pocket. When he sang like a deacon who’d punched a clock, it rang true. He was raised on call-and-response, so he knew how to answer the foreman and the family with the same voice.

Look at the picture again. The smile is real. The weight is real. That’s the register of a man who learned to hold both. Which is why, when he warned about “tonight,” folks on third shift understood.

“Now comes Miller time.”

The next page has the sun low. Stadium lights tall. Couples strolling out in their work-casual best. In the foreground a giant cold mug, hand wrapped tight, foam high like reward. Bottom corner says 1982. The copy is a promise: you did your hours. Here’s your relief.

This is the blue-collar mirror right across from Bobby. Same decade. Same clock. Ads sold the off-shift as salvation. Finish the game. Finish the shift. Then fix the ache with a beer. You can hear the whistle in that sunset. You can hear the foreman in that grip.

Put it next to Womack and the rhyme jumps out. The ad says, “Now comes tonight.” Bobby says, “Wait until tonight.” One sells an answer for the hour after work. The other tells the truth about what shows up when the house goes quiet. Both know the shop floor still exists in ’81, just thinner. Fewer overtime slips. More strain inside the living room.

Why it matters here: this is how the era taught us to handle shrinkage. Less public care, more private coping. The bar becomes community center. The couch becomes counseling. For a lot of Black workers, church and shift were still the spine, so Bobby’s church-born testimony cut through the commercial gloss. He sounded like the deacon who punched a clock, not the announcer who said everything was fine.

So no, the blue-collar thread isn’t a reach. It’s the layout. On one page, a hymn of survival in a family photo. On the next, a chilled answer to a long day. Same night. Different endings.

Trade, not aid. Right there on the page.

This Jet spread shows an economic playbook, not a vibe check. A civil-rights org signs a five-year pact with a soda company that routes real money and power: a 15 percent Black employment goal including leadership seats, Black-owned ad and travel agencies in the vendor stack, 15 percent of deposits into Black-owned banks, scholarships for HBCU students, the first Black-owned franchise, and a $10 million program to back minority wholesalers. Because Black consumers are pouring serious dollars into the economy, the deal says some of that flow must come back through Black institutions.

Zoom the frame. The same group is pressing the Big Three automakers for parallel commitments. Because union plants still anchor a lot of Black households in ’82, even as overtime shrinks. This is blue-collar leverage in print: negotiate procurement, hiring, deposits, and distribution while the public safety net thins. It is reciprocity over charity. It is receipts.

Now tie it to Bobby. The ad on the last page promised relief after the shift. This page is the chessboard behind that promise. Corporate America markets hard to the living room while activists force terms that send some dollars back to the block. Meanwhile the man in the song hears “her girlfriend’s got…” and feels the squeeze of status goods in a tightening wage world. Church voice meets shop-floor math. That is why the hook lands. “Wait until tonight” is not just a breakup chorus. It is the hour when policy, paychecks, and pride all show up in the same room.

John H Johnson and Defense Secretary Weinberger

Look at this page. John H. Johnson brings in Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger to talk straight to Jet and Ebony. Weinberger says “no tolerance” for bias, promises to probe discrimination, says the housing for troops is “wretched” and needs help, and, crucially, pledges to grow Black officers. He defends the budget but adds they won’t wipe out social programs. That’s a Republican cabinet official, in Black media, saying inclusion out loud.

If those Reagan-era Republicans walked into 2025, they’d be branded RINOs, called “woke,” and primaried by Tuesday. “Increase Black officers”? Today they’d sneer “DEI.” Meeting with Jet and Ebony? They’d call it pandering. “Not wipe out social programs”? Socialist creep. The party we knew is gone; the TV set got replaced by an outrage machine that rewards the boo, not the build.

And that’s the Womack echo. Back then the line was “wait until tonight” and you might still find a ladder in the morning. Now the message to their own moderates is colder: if you think you’re lonely now, wait until tonight. The purge is the point.

Conference room candor.

Top photo: a circle of Black editors in chairs, notepads out, sleeves rolled. A cabinet official sits with them and answers. No podium. No flag wall. Just questions and receipts. He talks bias in the ranks, housing for troops, and even the Middle East in plain terms, noting millions of Palestinian civilians who want peace. That’s not a press release. That’s press.

Bottom photo: the handshake image after the grilling. Smiles, but only after the work. This is what the Black press was at its best in ’82. Church, union hall, and newsroom in one. You could clock out, pick up Jet, and see your editors put power in a chair and make him talk like a neighbor.

Tie it back to Womack. The song names what happens in the house at night. These pages show what happened in daylight to keep that night from swallowing the house. Policy in the room. Paychecks on the line. A working class still visible. If you think you’re lonely now, here’s how people fought not to be.

Two pages talk to each other: Bobby’s bedroom monologue and Jet’s birth-control ad.

The ad is 1982, speaking in women’s voices about a cheap, discreet, mail-order spermicide. No doctor visit. No applicator. Shows up in an unmarked envelope. That is control you can hold in your hand. It normalizes Black women setting terms for sex, timing, and family planning in the middle of a tight economy.

Now hear the song again. His lines are a working man’s ledger and a control check. “She’s always complainin’…” “Her girlfriend’s got…” “I can’t be in two places at one time.” He is stretched by shrinking hours and rising costs, and he is rattled by her new leverage. If she can choose when to have sex and when to have kids, she can also choose when to leave. So he tries to flip the power with a threat dressed as a warning: “If you think you’re lonely now… wait until tonight. I’ll be long gone.”

That is the backlash note. Not cartoon villainy. A bruised provider identity colliding with female autonomy and consumer aspiration. The ad tells her, you don’t have to plan your life around his paycheck or a clinic’s hours. The song tells her, don’t push me, I can withdraw what I still control. Night becomes the arena where these forces meet: contraception makes desire speak louder; austerity makes his pride speak louder. “Needs come out to breathe” hits different when birth control makes those needs negotiable on her terms.

So it makes sense. The magazine sells agency in the margins of a shrinking wage world. The record captures the friction that follows. One page says, “your body, your call.” The other answers, “my hours, my house.” The hook is the stalemate. The way out is naming both truths and building a life where the power isn’t all in the paycheck or all in the bedroom.

Jet is showing you the whole renegotiation of the house, not just the headline shock.

First, the Semicid page said plain: Black women are setting terms on sex and timing. Cheap, discreet control you can order by mail. Because autonomy got practical in ’82. Now flip to “The Sexes.” The wild murder-for-hire story is tabloidy, but its job is cultural policing. It screams, “female desire out of bounds,” so the audience gets a cautionary tale. Because when women gain leverage, the first response is often panic stories about what happens when they use it “too far.”

Second, the Massachusetts item shows the state drawing bright lines around family structure. Who can marry whom becomes a proxy fight over authority in the home. Because when private power shifts, public rules tighten to hold the frame.

Third, Georgia’s prenup ruling is the quiet revolution. Courts admit marriage is also a contract in a high-divorce era, so talk assets upfront. Because the provider model is wobbling, wages are thinner, and property gets negotiated the way shifts used to be. Love and logistics share a table now.

Put that against Womack. Her agency rises, the law codifies new rules, the tabloids moralize, and the working man’s identity feels cornered. So he reaches for the power he still has: presence and withdrawal. “If you think you’re lonely now… wait until tonight” reads like a breakup but functions like a boundary in a world where the old boundaries moved.

That’s why these pages sit together. Birth control ad. Sex panic blurb. Marriage law update. They map the same fight Bobby sang: who sets the terms in the house when the job can’t.

Put it against Womack. He’s the working man saying, I’m stretched and I still want control. “Wait until tonight” is his leverage. The poster answers with the counter-myth: become more than a worker and meet a woman who won’t let you be less than a man. Two routes out of the squeeze sit side by side in this issue: Miller after the shift, or the military as the new shift. Either way, night is where the truth shows up. The drill yard trains the body. The house decides who you are.

Isabel Sanford cracks the TV joke that lands like policy: you watch shows that teach you to lose the weight you wouldn’t have gained if you weren’t watching TV. That’s the same lullaby as Miller Time. Sedate the ache after work and call it self-care. Then Dr. Vernard Johnson offers the counter. Church as the “high” that doesn’t crash. That’s Bobby’s register: testify the wound, sing the coping.

Terry Cummings warns about living by statues and star players. Translation: envy is a schedule. “Her girlfriend’s got…” wasn’t just a line in the song; it was a whole economy of aspiration aimed at houses with shrinking shifts. Senator Tsongas swings in with the cold quip. Reagan signing the Voting Rights Act is “Bonnie and Clyde coming out for gun control.” Cynicism, but it marks the pivot: rights framed as PR while austerity tightens.

Rita Marley closes the loop with autonomy over promoters, calling over commerce. That’s the women’s throughline from the Semicid ad to prenups: set your terms and don’t apologize. Put it all together and you hear why Womack hit so hard. The decade offered two paths through the night: buy a remedy, or build a ritual. Celebrity told you who to be; church told you how to stand; politics told you to wait. Bobby named the hour when all of that walks into the same room and asks, “Who are you holding?”

Baldwin in the birthdays box feels right. A quiet square of a man who taught me how to hear a hard truth without flinching. He called Harlem an occupied place. He said the badge, white or Black, often showed up as the state’s blunt instrument. He wrote that some Black officers in Black neighborhoods could be the hardest on us because they had something to prove. I wore the badge. I can’t duck what he saw. I have stood in living rooms at 2 a.m. where a policy failure got handed to a patrol car and told to fix it.

That’s why he is still my hero. Not because he was gentle to my profession, but because he refused to lie about its job in a starving system. Baldwin named the structure. Womack scored the feeling. The plant shrank, the safety net thinned, and the house carried the weight. One page says “become an officer.” Another page says “be a gentleman.” Baldwin asks the only question that matters at night: who are you serving, and who pays the bill for that service.

What I take from him is a charge, not a wound. Tell it plain. Don’t hide behind the uniform or the microphone. Build a world where the badge isn’t asked to replace jobs, housing, and care. Until then, I will honor the man who told the truth about us and still loved us enough to keep writing.

He wants the Sam Cooke role. He grills in the yard. He writes at a crowded desk. He wrestles with the same temptations the ad pages push at you, and the same fixes the church pages preach to you. This is the same magazine that sells Miller Time, birth control by mail, and a court saying prenups are just contracts now. Jet is showing the new house rules while Bobby is living them in public.

Now hear the song again. The chorus is not just a threat. It is a night audit. Hours thin. Pride takes hits. Bills breathe louder. She has new leverage. He reaches for the power he still owns, which is presence and withdrawal. “Wait until tonight” is how a man in chaos tries to draw a line. It sounds like romance. It feels like a policy failure landing in a bedroom.

Why this matters to you right now. Back then you could still “put in the work,” even as overtime vanished. Today the app is the foreman and the night never ends. The feeling is the same. What saves the house is the same. Truth told in church cadence. A partner who can stretch a dollar. A catalog of work you can lean on. Don’t show vulnerability. Don’t be late. Don’t be messy. Don’t cuss. Don’t make it about you. Don’t get mystical. Don’t say the quiet part. Don’t question the uniform. Don’t miss the headline. Don’t shame the race.

I did not want to write this. It was late. It felt so much like putting our damn business in the streets. That voice sat on my chest while I flipped open Jet, October 22, 1984. First page. A bottle on ice and a dare: “Have you ever seen a grown man cry?” Permission and a muzzle in one frame. Tears licensed. Numbing offered. Crown over rain.

Yes, I’m being dramatic. After seeing that ad, it was as if something somewhere somehow spoke through the dark and told me to tell it plain. Or it was just sleep deprivation laced with Mountain Dew. Either way, I’m here.

And then 1984 keeps talking to you. Prince on the radio every hour. Car windows cracked. The purple guitar slides in with

“I never meant to cause you any sorrow. I never meant to cause you any pain.”

That was the apology loop they trained into us. Be perfect. If you slip, apologize for existing. The chorus breaks that spell.

“I only wanted to see you laughing in the purple rain.”

Not a joke. A ritual. Purple as bruise and royalty and church cloth. Rain as cleansing and public weather. The song turned pop radio into an altar where grief could breathe and become mercy.

I turn the Jet pages and there he is. Howard Rollins in A Soldier’s Story. The feature reads like celebration. It is also a warning. The film is not about soldiers. It is about the violence we do to ourselves in the name of respectability.

Master Sergeant Waters keeps order by humiliating his own. He calls it leadership. He calls it love for the race. He wants to be acceptable to White power, so he cuts pieces off Black men until they fit.

You felt this before you had language. The boss who required you to be quiet. The teacher who said be twice as good. The usher who policed your skirt. The cousin who called you soft because you refused to perform tough. The rule is simple. Crown over rain.

Prince offered another rule in the same year.

“Honey I know, I know times are changing.”

He does not shout policy. He moves you toward practice.

“You say you want a leader, but you can’t seem to make up your mind. I think you better close it and let me guide you to the purple rain.”

Not to a podium. To weather that can hold what the room cannot.

Respectability tells you to hide the wound. The song tells you to let the sky see it so it can wash.

Howard Rollins carried that choice in his body. A brilliant Black actor, asked to be spotless in public while the industry shadowed him with gossip and the era pressed men like him into closets. No we do not need to dig through his private life to tell the truth. The representational load alone can crush you. Add the surveillance and the moral panic of the eighties. Add the bottle that pretends to help. You get a man breaking under a crown that cut his scalp every night he tried to sleep. Hear Prince again.

“I only wanted to one time to see you laughing.”

Rollins gave us Davenport so we could remember how to laugh with dignity in a world that punished it.

I know that ache. I wore a uniform in a system I am not sure loved us. There were nights I told myself I was helping somebody by making somebody else smaller. Follow the rule. Keep order. Make numbers. The badge felt like honor. Some nights it felt like a muzzle. I carried home the quiet. I can still smell it on my hands. This is not confession for sport. This is a debt. I enforced a script written to keep us looking tidy while our people bled inside. Prince wrote the counter-sermon for nights like that.

“I only wanted to see you bathing in the purple rain.”

No not bathing in compliance. Bathing in truth.

Jet wrapped the script in glossy pages so you could study both. The 95 BRAVO Military Police ad promised purpose.

The feature on a Black WWII colonel still waiting for full honors told the other half. Service given. Praise delayed. Our women in the WACS reunion smiled for the camera and reminded us they volunteered while the military segregated them by race and sex. We served. We saluted. We swallowed. The song outside the newsstand told another story. Close the umbrella. Let it rain.

Now hold this next to the day Charleston opened its gates. February 18, 1865. Four years after the first shots at Fort Sumter. Confederates set fires and fled. Union troops marched in. At the front of a column of U.S. Colored Troops rode a Black Union soldier with a rough board painted LIBERTY lifted high. Black Charlestonians poured into the streets. Church bells pealed. Hymns rose. People shouted and wept and reached for one another. Reporters wrote it down. Ministers preached it. Soldiers kept diaries. Northern weeklies printed illustrations of the procession. Teachers in the first freed schools told children about it. Then the textbooks starved it of ink. The city sold plantation tours and forgot the sign. This was our Independence scene with no marble and no fireworks. A homemade word lifted over a city that once sold us. That was rain. Grief and joy poured out in public. A baptism into a different future. Those U.S. Colored Troops led a city into daylight. Look at how we deploy U.S. troops now, and tell me your eyes stay dry. Is this progress?

Now, I want the record set straight on this Charleston event. That day in 1865 is not myth. It is receipt. A Black Union soldier leading U.S. Colored Troops into a city that bought and sold our ancestors. A homemade sign that said LIBERTY. Bells ringing. People weeping. That is the sound of public baptism. That is the picture we should teach beside July Fourth. The fact that it sits in the attic of our civic memory is the point of Jet Black Saturday. We pull it back into light so it can do its work.

Now Memphis. Tyre Nichols. Our own officers performed the crown for the same old system. They chose image over humanity. They used the theater of discipline on one of us. The street remembers. So does the sky. Master Sgt. Waters stood at this same crossroads in the movie. Save us by cutting us down. Or save us by holding the person in front of you. Crown or rain.

Judging from the low click through rate on the last title with Will Smith’s name on it, some readers are gonna ask why I bring up the Will Smith Oscars night. Lawd here come the unsubscribes. It’s because you watched a good man crack under the weight of being perfect in front of people who have never carried our particular mask.

March 27, 2022. A joke about Jada’s shaved head. Will Smith walks onstage and slaps Chris Rock. He sits and tells Rock to keep her name out of his mouth. Minutes later he wins Best Actor. He apologizes. The Academy bans him for ten years. I am not here to litigate it. I am naming the trap. Public control or public shame. He chose steel and paid for it. If you have never felt a room ask you to smile while the crown digs into your scalp, you missed the point.

Hear the lyric that night should have given us.

“You say you want a leader.”

We needed someone to choose rain on purpose and lead us out of the performance into the weather.

And then there is the Court. Clarence Thomas writes what Waters preached. Hurt us to save us. Strip the tools that opened doors. Call mercy a bias. Call repair a handout. The robe is another uniform. The gavel is another bottle. Order with no love behind it is punishment theater dressed as law. Prince named the pivot plainly.

“You better close it and let me guide you.”

The Court tells us to close our mouths and obey. The song tells leaders to close their mouths and listen to the storm they created.

Dick Gregory stands next to Frank Wills, the Watergate guard the country forgot, and says I will fight for this man. This is what a Black public looks like when it is alive. Arguments. Boycotts. Reports. Appointments. Love that makes a plan. Hear the bridge.

“Honey I know times are changing.”

That is not optimism. That is instruction. Move with change. Do not police it to death.

Entertainment mirrors the bind. The Cosby Show sits at number one. Cicely Tyson prepares to lead Native Son. Prince’s film and soundtrack spawn book deals. S.O.S. Band and Jeffrey Osborne are everywhere. Visibility climbs while respectability tightens its grip. Image is not salvation. Waters proves it. Rollins pays for it. The song refuses to let image carry the weight of soul. It keeps pulling us back to practice. Laugh. Bathe. Let it rain.

Let’s come back to the set. A Soldier’s Story places a Black lawyer-officer named Davenport among men who do not trust White justice and do not trust him yet either. He refuses to become the overseer the system wants. He insists on truth without the lash. He carries himself like the future. Rollins said he wanted you to see that from the first frame. A forerunner. A link between the subservient Black past and the proud Black future. Not a perfect man. A different kind of leader. He is the embodiment of that line from Prince.

“You say you want a leader.”

Then he closes the performance and does the work.

Rollins himself deserved that kind of leadership. He gave us Davenport with elegance and bite. Then the weight closed in. Studio whisper campaigns. Tabloids. The old panic around Black men and queerness. The terror of being watched for flaws while being asked to represent a whole people. He was not a symbol. He was a man. He deserved the room to heal. He deserved rain and got more crown. Prince wrote him a refuge in plain sight.

“I only wanted to see you laughing.”

He did not get enough rooms where that line could be true without a price.

Respectability is a quiet church with a cruel altar. It calls punishment love. It calls silence wisdom. It dresses the lash in a uniform and a title. Purple Rain is a loud choir with a soft hand. It calls grief by its name and then turns it into mercy you can act from. The ad at the front of Jet tells you to cry and drink. The song tells you to cry and live. One sells the crown. One opens the sky.

You can feel the same split in my badge years. I believed control would save lives. Sometimes it did. Sometimes it broke people because it broke me.

“I only wanted to one time to see you laughing.”

I hear that line and see people I could have treated with more care. I hear it and see rooms that needed weather, not theater.

And because 1984 is the year holding this whole file, remember how you consumed it. You heard Prince before you hit the theater for A Soldier’s Story. Radio in the kitchen before the babysitter arrives. Radio in the car on the way to the multiplex, weekdays cheaper than the weekend.

“I only wanted to see you bathing in the purple rain.”

That line rode shotgun. You walked into a film about punishment and pride with a song about mercy already in your ear. We were given the antidote and the illness in one summer. The choice was always there.

Before I close, there’s the irony that will not let me go. In Baltimore a wax museum holds Howard Rollins on a dusty display. In Philadelphia a mural by Ernel Martinez, painted in 2021 at 1631 W Girard Ave, honors Charles Fuller, whose Pulitzer-winning A Soldier’s Play became this film. The actor is frozen. The writer is on a wall that breathes and collects weather. Do not turn our people into statues while the theology of punishment keeps working. Give them rain while they are alive, the purple rain. Put LIBERTY back in a living hand.

We can live by the crown. Or we can live by the rain. The crown says control. The rain says feel, repair, move. The crown needs you quiet. The rain needs you honest. The crown wants you to perform. The rain wants you alive. The song already gave you the map.

“You say you want a leader.”

Close the act. Step outside. Let the sky do what the sky does. Then lead like a person who remembers what water feels like.

I was ready to skip tonight. Get some sleep, old man. My fingers were raw from typing. My eyes felt like sandpaper. I opened one last tab and there he was. Thurgood Marshall on the cover of Jet. August 24, 1967. Staring through that magazine cover like he caught me trying to sneak out of class. That look said, I’m tired too. Sit down anyway.

Maybe it’s the ancestors tapping the radiator. Maybe it’s just me, drunk on sleep deprivation. Or maybe it’s those black-and-white photos inside that issue. Cities on fire that look like the edges of our family albums. Either way, the cover wouldn’t let me go. So pull up a chair, just you and me. We’re going to talk about the night the country looked at a Black lawyer’s face and said, this might still be a nation of laws.

Late August ’67. Your kitchen radio was doing what radios used to do. It gave you church and gossip and the news. In that same week Marvin and Tammi floated across the air with a line that felt like a benediction. Heaven must have sent you.

The single hit the world within forty-eight hours of that Jet date, and Motown was in its preacher bag. The record is simple on paper and devastating in the heart: two voices sharing one vow, a bassline walking slow like a couple arm-in-arm, strings lifting right when the lyric says lift. Call and response. Church without a building fund. It is not just romance. It’s a theory of government disguised as a love song: show up for me and I will breathe again.

Open the magazine and you see what showing up looked like. You see a government that is messy and still trying. You see a man who won a Supreme Court seat with calm that had teeth. “Despite hostile quizzing by Southern lawmakers, Marshall refuses to lose his cool.” That was the line. Cool didn’t mean passive. Cool meant you are not going to make me break character while we decide what the law means for millions of people.

Flip the page and you can hear Lyndon Johnson stage-whisper his own prayer. “I want to introduce to you the new Supreme Court justice—Thurgood Marshall. I hope I’m not premature.” A president using his mic to lean the room toward justice. Not perfect. Still power. Then you hit the pages that always get misfiled in the memory box. Congress hiding behind procedure while cities burn.

“Will take months to resolve wording of simplest bill.” “How Congress fiddles as cities burn.” Bulletproof glass for House members while regular folks had plywood and hope. The point wasn’t that the times were calm. The point was that the chaos triggered public hearings, votes, and money. Federal curiosity wasn’t a think piece. It was a phone ringing in an office that had staff.

The receipts inside that single issue are a syllabus. “Say crisis in ghettos more urgent than Vietnam.” That wasn’t Twitter. That was the Congressional Record talking like the house next door was on fire. Then Jet pulls you into the survey pages and asks the country straight up. What caused the riots. What will prevent the next one. Imagine Washington asking our people to write back with answers and promising to print them. That’s not romantic. That’s accountability.

You want more. Here it is. “More than 75 per cent of Negro children in the South are still being denied rights guaranteed by the Supreme Court.” A sentence like a throat punch. The country had a ruling. The country lacked teeth. The next page proves teeth matter. “Licenses of 3 Chicago real estate firms suspended for practicing discrimination.” Not a hashtag. A suspension. People moved because regulators did their job. Then the wage story tells you why anger doesn’t evaporate just because you passed a bill. “White unskilled workers paid more than Negroes,” even when the qualifications favored the Negro workers. That’s not a mystery. That’s policy.

Even the soundscape is in debate. “Cool it” programs on Black radio. WAOK in Atlanta throwing street dances in trouble spots. WVKO in Columbus saying the “cool it” talk keeps violence top of mind. WCIN in Cincinnati trying the middle lane. Media sets the temperature. Not neutral. Never was.

And inside the Ticker you see the other war, the one nobody puts on the poster. Negro members of a combat unit complaining about unchecked racial incidents in Vietnam. A Ku Klux Klan cross burned by a barracks. The empire exports everything. Including bigotry. If you don’t confront it, it ships next day.

Then Whitney Young steps up and tells the truth clean. When a white man commits a mass murder we call him a sick man. When a few Negroes act out, the whole Negro community gets condemned. That’s the algorithm before the algorithm. That’s why Marshall had to sit there like granite and do constitutional math while men asked if he could be fair to whites.

Here’s the part that will bother you if you’re awake. In that same issue you see federal gears turning everywhere. “May name Negro to top post in D.C.” Riot commissions staffing up. A new Watts bus line getting people to work and easing tensions. Governors saying the quiet part loud, like Iowa’s Harold Hughes: sometimes you need corrective discrimination to offset 100 years of the other kind. The country did not love us. The country at least picked up the phone.

And look at Marshall himself. Let’s say the quiet parts out loud. He carried privileges plenty of brothers didn’t. Light skin in a dark-skin world that punished shade. Howard and Lincoln degrees. A CV that opened doors. He could have cashed in, shut up, played golf. Instead he turned those passes into a battering ram for the least of these. NAACP briefs that tore Jim Crow’s hinges off. Clients who had nothing but a name and a county line. When he finally got to the Court, he didn’t get rich. Jet would later note he was the poorest member of the Court. He wore that like armor. He used prestige to redistribute dignity. Not to go yacht shopping. He was exhausted and he stayed anyway.

Now, let’s do the hard contrast, because history is petty and it keeps receipts. Marshall’s heir by seat is Clarence Thomas, and I wish this paragraph didn’t have to exist. Thomas writes in his memoir that Yale stained him with the stigma of affirmative action. He put a sticker on his diploma to show his disgust. Fine. Pain is real. But watch what he did with it. Instead of using that Yale key to open doors for the kids who got told no ten thousand times, he welded his trauma into a locksmith kit and dead-bolted the next generation out. Over and over his opinions tell a story that sounds like revenge dressed up as doctrine. Not equal justice. Payback.

And in the background, the lifestyle. Decades of luxury trips and favors from billionaire friends, reported out in painful detail. Real talk, you do not need a law degree to understand how that looks to people standing in eviction court. It looks like a justice who traded the choir loft for the owner’s box. Tell me that doesn’t read like billionaire sugar daddies keeping the cushions warm. I don’t care how you spin it, that shit corrodes faith. You cannot preach originalism from a private jet and expect the pews to nod along.

Back to the record, because the record is how we keep our balance. “Every day there’s something new.” In ’67 the newsstand really did hand you something new. Bills. Surveys. Staff hires. Long meetings that turned into votes. The song’s arrangement teaches the lesson. The bass stays steady, the drums soft-step, the strings arrive sparingly. You earn the lift. “Heaven must have sent you.” On paper it’s romantic. Underneath it’s Marshall walking into a hearing and refusing to blink. Heaven is not a cloud. Heaven is a Court seat and the power to make equal protection mean something on Tuesday morning. “To find a love like ours is rare these days.” The rare part wasn’t Black love. We always had that. The rare part was the state taking Black grievance seriously enough to act.

Listen to the bridge. “I look in the mirror, and I’m glad to see, laughter in the eyes where tears used to be.” Policy is the mirror. When it reflects you, your face changes. That’s what Brown did in classrooms and what fair-housing enforcement did on moving day and what voting rights did at the registrar’s desk. “You taught me the meaning of givin’.” Giving is not sentiment. Giving is jurisdiction, budgets, votes, teeth. The Funk Brothers play it like they know the difference. There’s a gospel in those chord changes. Grace is free, but strings cost money.

Marshall, older and worn, still on the bench, said the quiet part plain: when the Court blesses violations and calls them remedies, it “erodes faith in the law of those who rely on the law’s protection” and leaves a “hollow remedy.” He wasn’t workshopping a line; he was performing an autopsy on Equal Protection.

Look around today: a Court tossing precedent like confetti, carving kingly immunity, kneecapping voting and civil-rights safeguards, smashing reproductive autonomy, and telling regulators to sit down while guns and gerrymanders run the block. That’s the invitational. Each ruling whispers to the powerful, the rules are optional. Fascism doesn’t need a parade; it just needs a docket. Drain meaning from the law and you don’t get order….you get street physics. People test the edges because the center is bullshit. That’s lawlessness in a robe.

And here’s why the Thomas contrast matters beyond gossip. When a justice radiates resentment and takes gifts like they’re a sacrament, the message to the kid in the courthouse lobby is simple. The game is rigged, so stop believing in refs. That is a bomb under the court system. You can argue doctrine all you want. If the people stop believing the law belongs to them, they will stay home on jury duty and stop calling witnesses and take justice private. That is when a nation gets very dark, very fast. We do not have to agree on policy to agree on this: legitimacy is oxygen. You cannot snort it on Thursday and breathe clean on Friday.

So what do we do with the cover on the table. We read it as an instruction manual. Marshall had privileges, yes, and he leveraged all of them downward. That is the standard. Use your light skin, your degrees, your access, your boring meetings, your commas, your plane tickets, your donor lists, your microphone, for the people who cannot get through the door without you. If your resume ends with you on a dock waving from a yacht, you did the job wrong. If your resume ends with you the poorest person in the room because you spent it all on briefs and travel and late nights at a kitchen table with families who had nothing but names and county lines, you did it right.

Let’s land with the song expanded, because it’s the only honest landing. That final vamp, “Oh, heaven must have sent you,” rides the chord until your chest loosens. The genius is not the lyric. The genius is the repetition. It is the sound of someone convincing themselves that help is real. In ’67, help felt procedural. Summonses. Committees. A president who said the quiet part into a hot mic and waited for the votes. The music says keep saying it until the body believes it. The law says keep writing it until the country cannot ignore it.

I’m not romanticizing the pain. The issue you’re holding is full of funerals, arrests, and parents staring at burned-out corners. Detroit’s morgues backed up. Chicago teachers quitting. You can smell the smoke on the page. I’m saying the government hadn’t ghosted us yet. It was messy. It was slow. It was also public. When Congress dragged, Jet called it fiddling. When agencies cared, Jet printed phone numbers and told readers where to write. That matters. Because in a democracy, embarrassment is a policy tool. Ask any senator who remembers those headlines.

So was ’67 a better time to be Black in America. In some brutal ways, yes. Because the state still worried about our faith in its project. Because a president stood in a room and said, I want you to meet your next Justice even before the vote. Because regulators pulled licenses. Because a magazine asked the country for solutions and promised to publish the answers. Because the cover on the table showed a Black man’s face and made it normal to put him in the highest courtroom in the land. It was chaotic as hell, but the phone still worked when we dialed.

I keep seeing that line float over the magazine. Heaven must have sent you. Not as a love song. As a memo. Heaven sent you a worker. A man who would win cases for the NAACP, take his beatings in committee, and sit on that bench like a lighthouse in a storm he knew wasn’t over. He wasn’t a saint. He was proof. And if we want proof again, we will have to demand a Court that stops playing rich man’s roulette and remembers who the law is for. We will have to pick up the phone until it rings off the hook. We will have to be annoying. We will have to be loud. We will have to be loving and mean it.

The Jet Cover That Stopped Time

You want to know what it meant to flip open Jet in July 2001? You saw Luther Vandross, sharp as ever, talking about his battles and his blessings. Luther wasn’t just an artist he was a cultural institution. His music was the glue in our living rooms, the background at our barbecues, and the soundtrack when we walked down aisles in those Society World wedding announcements.

For us, Luther was love in stereo. Not just romance, but survival.

And it wasn’t only about Luther’s notes it was about what they meant. His ballads stitched themselves into the fabric of family life, teaching us how to imagine tenderness even in households where tenderness was scarce. When the world told us to harden, he gave us permission to soften.

That’s why Jet putting him on the cover hit so hard. It wasn’t fluff man it was confirmation. Confirmation that our most private hopes for love and connection had a public face, a superstar saying to the world: Black love is not a myth, it’s a movement.

Weddings as Cultural Proof

Jet never missed a chance to show us. Those pages filled with newlyweds from Florida to Texas to South Carolina weren’t just announcements. They were counter-programming. Proof against every headline screaming that Black families were broken. Proof that we were still trying, still fighting to make covenant promises even when society said it was impossible.

And what music do you think was playing at those receptions? Luther. Always Luther. Here and Now. So Amazing. His voice carried us when we didn’t have the words.

The Historical Throughline

This wasn’t just about pretty pictures and pretty songs. This was about the restoration of our mating rituals ripped apart by bondage, slowly stitched back together after Reconstruction. The genesis of the blues in the late 1800s was really the sound of us relearning how to love one another when chains and auction blocks had taught us to separate. By 2001, Luther’s ballads were a continuation of that same work.

Healing is a process. It didn’t end in 1870. It didn’t end in 1970. And it wasn’t finished in 2001.

Slow jams were the bridge. Teddy Pendergrass whispering Turn Off the Lights taught us how to imagine intimacy in candle glow when the world outside was chaos. Anita Baker’s Sweet Love showed us how tenderness could still sound defiant, how softness could be power.

And Luther? He stood at the center of that canon, his voice blending gospel ache with bedroom vulnerability. Songs like If This World Were Mine weren’t just romance — they were survival manuals, instructions on how to hold one another when history kept trying to pull us apart.

Those ballads stitched us together through every cookout, every prom night slow dance, every reconciliation after slammed doors. They reminded us that love was not just possible but necessary as a form of resistance and a refusal to let our spirits stay broken.

The Tension – Brokenness and Hope

The same issue that showed Luther smiling also ran stories about whether Black youth were more “disrespectful” than ever, whether our families were breaking down, whether discipline was gone. We were fragile and resilient all at once.

And here’s what struck me: it was a different world. George W. Bush , yeah, the same man Kanye once said “don’t care about Black people” is pictured here shaking hands with South African president Thabo Mbeki, talking about AIDS relief. He wasn’t trying to humiliate him. He was trying, however imperfectly, to uplift. And Kanye today? Looks like he hates Black people too including himself. That’s the twisted irony of time.

And look again. Black Republicans like Colin Powell are in these pages too. Bush had probably had more Black people serving in his administration than Clinton, and seeing it in Jet’s pages back then didn’t look like some DEI stunt. It was a Republican White House that actually looked more diverse than a Democrat’s. Then flip to the wedding announcements with so many Black college grads from FAMU, Bethune-Cookman, Florida State, Mizzou, Indiana, Howard. The doors were creaking open. Not wide, but open enough that Jet could remind us of possibility.

Contrast that with today: white institutions shutting the doors tight, and Black colleges gasping for breath as student aid dries up. What was fragile then feels even more fragile now.

That’s why Luther mattered. That’s why those wedding announcements mattered. His songs weren’t just about love; they were aspirational architecture, scaffolding holding up relationships in a world still betting against us.

The Weight of Icons

We’ve been here before. When Luther died in 2005, it was another gut punch in the same way Whitney’s passing hit us in 2012. Every time, we lost not just a star but a therapist we never paid. These icons carried our grief, our joy, our longing. And they left us sooner than we could bear.

Their absence reminded us that music ain’t just entertainment. It’s infrastructure. It holds us up when the system won’t. Every note Luther sang was scaffolding around a people trying to heal, and when that scaffolding fell, the gap between who we are and what we deserve felt wider than ever.

Toward Healing

And so the story circles back. From Reconstruction blues to Luther’s ballads, from Jet’s wedding pages to today’s questions about whether Black families can endure, we are still writing that love story. Still trying to repair what was broken by centuries of bondage and a hundred years of fragile freedom.

The Jet Cover That Stopped Time

You want to know what 1985 felt like in Black America? Picture Whitney Houston on the cover of Jet in that pink blouse and the kind of smile that made you feel like you’d just been let in on a billion‑dollar secret. It wasn’t a magazine cover; it was a cultural earthquake in glossy print. Back then, a Jet cover didn’t just sit in the barbershop rack nah man it hit deep somewhere within you too ephemeral to put into words. Black Pinterest before Pinterest, the kind of image folks clipped, magneted to the fridge, and stared at like a contract with the future.

This wasn’t “oh, she’s cute.” This was “oh, this is what winning looks like and it looks like us.” And in ’85, when wins were rare and the air was heavy with loss, that mattered enough to share before you even turned the page.

1985 in Snapshots – Jet as Our Social Media

That same issue was a time capsule of everything we were and everything we were fighting for.

• The Cosby Show was cleaning up at the Emmys, selling America a picture of the Black family it wanted to believe in — and some of us wanted to believe in too.

• Kappas were out in the streets picketing the South African embassy, suits pressed, signs high, because apartheid wasn’t some distant thing — it was a family matter.

• In Cincinnati, Black residents were boycotting a meat market after a clerk assaulted an 82-year-old Black woman. Jet ran that like it mattered because it did.

• Carl Lewis was talking about how he made more money in Japan than here at home — still true for too many Black athletes.

And in between these stories were the ones we didn’t need Jet to tell us: the corners where the drug epidemic was swallowing people whole. While the headlines outside our community made it sound like we were the problem, Jet was showing the receipts that we were still building, resisting, shining.

Now if you flipped through the ads before Whitney’s spread, you’d swear Lucifer himself was moonlighting as Jet’s ad manager. There’s a cigarette ad with a brother looking like he’s one puff away from coughing up his soul — ‘Come up to Kool’ my ass, that’s a down payment on some not cool emphysema.

Then a wine ad promising ‘one on one’ in a glass ok yeah, one and the same way the devil wears one Prada. It’s like the sponsors all got together and said, ‘Let’s sell the dream and the slow death in the same magazine.’

Whitney – The Glow Before the Storm

Then you turn the page, and there she is — not just 22 years old, but moving like she’s already got the keys to every music hall from Harlem to Hollywood. Fresh off a gold debut album, You Give Good Love and Saving All My Love for You climbing the charts like they paid rent there.

Touring with Jeffrey Osborne. Sharing stages with Luther like it’s a friendly game of one‑on‑one between legends. Smiling that million‑watt smile like the world had finally caught up to what some of us in the know had been shouting for generations which is that the Houston‑Warwick‑Franklin bloodline was basically the Black American Songbook in human form.

Whitney wasn’t out here trying to be anybody but herself. Pop? R&B? She didn’t care if you called it pop, soul, or fried chicken and collard greens as long as it was good, she’d sing it. And in the middle of the crack years, when the news made it seem like the only thing leaving Black neighborhoods was chalk outlines, there was Whitney. Flawless. Elegant. A voice that could part clouds. Standing on TV and saying without words, We are still beautiful. We are still here.

Whitney & Bobby – The Aspirational Love Story

So when she married Bobby Brown, it wasn’t just tabloid gossip to us. It was like the Super Bowl halftime show and the Grammys crashing into each other on live TV, and everybody in the room had money on both teams. A crossover episode of our two favorite shows, but this time the guest stars were running the script. Two stars from two different galaxies … the voice and the swagger locking eyes at the altar like they knew the ratings were through the roof.

And why it mattered? Because in a time when we were losing too many families to prison and powder, that wedding was one of the few public love stories we could actually root for without asterisks. Not because it was perfect ,hell, we knew it wasn’t perfect. It was messy, magnetic, and it belonged to us in a way no fairy‑tale white wedding in People magazine ever could.

The Turn – When the Headlines Changed

Then the story got harder to watch. By the 90s, the shine was dimming. The voice that had carried so much hope was tangled up in rumors, mug shots, and reality TV meltdowns.

And here’s the thing , the way we rooted for her wasn’t just celebrity fandom. It was muscle memory. We had cousins, siblings, neighbors we prayed would “get clean” the same way we prayed for Whitney’s comeback. Every relapse, every missed note, hit like a family setback. Every rare performance where she still had it felt like a Sunday morning altar call.

Bittersweet Epilogue – When She Left Us

February 11, 2012. The news broke and the whole culture got quiet. Whitney Houston was gone. And just like that, it felt like the end of something bigger than music.

Her death closed a chapter — the same way Jet disappearing from shelves did. She’d been proof that even in the middle of chaos, something pure and elegant could come out of us and change the world.

We didn’t just save all our love for Whitney. She saved some of hers for us … enough to make us believe in ourselves when the world was telling us not to.

So you’d think I’d kick things off by reviewing a Spike Lee joint. Maybe School Daze. Maybe Chi-Raq. Maybe something streaming now that turns every scene into a tweet waiting to happen.

But nah.

I don’t really like Spike Lee movies.

(Malcolm X? Masterpiece. Full stop. But the rest? Too loud. Too proud. Too damn sure of itself.)

I don’t dislike them the way some folks hated the Star Wars sequels with the Black and Asian characters as poster examples of woke.

I dislike them the way Star Wars fans hate those sequels: not because of who was in them, but because the mystery got replaced with messaging. Everything became a lesson. Every character a symbol. Every beat built to make a point.

And I’m tired of movies that treat me like I need a syllabus.

That’s why I want to talk about The Penguin Lessons — the movie. Not the memoir. The film. A quiet little oddity that came and went with barely a ripple.

But it did something that most movies today are too scared to do.

It whispered.

And when you watch closely, that whisper becomes a scream. Not a Twitter thread. Not a sermon. Not a viral soundbite.

A scream of grief, of control, of erasure.

And somehow, that scream comes through a penguin in a blazer.

The Penguin Didn’t Talk. That’s Why They Loved Him.

The movie doesn’t hand-hold. Doesn’t narrate every beat. Set in 1970s Argentina, during a real dictatorship, it never once explains the political climate. No dates on screen. No character standing in for the audience.

It just lets you sit in it.

Michael (played by Steve Coogan) is a British teacher in an elite boarding school. He finds a penguin on a beach, nearly dead from an oil spill. He smuggles it back into Argentina and into the school.

That’s the plot. But that’s not the story.

The penguin becomes more than a pet. It becomes a comfort object, a mascot, a soul-softener in a place where hierarchy and silence run deep.

No one asks the penguin how it feels.

But they all feel better because it’s there.

Everything’s a Message Now. Nobody’s Listening.

Today, movies are built for discourse. Every line is a tweet. Every shot pre-memed. Directors scared of being misunderstood now explain everything. Writers flatten characters into archetypes so they’ll pass the vibe check.

And subtle films? They get labeled boring. Or worse: problematic.

But The Penguin Lessons doesn’t care what you think.

It trusts you.

Trusts you to notice what isn’t said. To sit with the discomfort. To hear the echoes in the silences. That’s not just art.

That’s respect.

They Used to Let Movies Breathe

The culture war has turned movies into landmines. Right-wing critics yell “woke” anytime they see a Black woman with dialogue. Liberals respond with scripts that sound like they were written by HR departments.

Everyone’s yelling.

Meanwhile, The Penguin Lessons sits in the corner, sipping maté and letting you watch a penguin walk across a courtyard for two full minutes. No music. No narration. Just footsteps.

I felt more from that than most Oscar winners this year.

Because it gave me space.

This Is How You Rebuke Fascism Without Saying “Fascism”

The dictatorship looms, but nobody explains it. That’s the power of this film.

There’s a maid named Sofía, played quietly and devastatingly by a young Argentine actress. She disappears. Gone. Kidnapped. No resolution.

Her grandmother, María, waits.

Others vanish too. We’re told it, softly, in a passing line. And again in the closing credits: Over 30,000 Argentines disappeared during the military regime.

The movie never raises its voice.

It doesn’t have to.

Because we’ve seen this before. And we’re seeing it again.

All across the world, people are disappearing and not just physically, but algorithmically. Silenced. Shadowbanned. Flattened.

The state doesn’t need a boot when it has a mute button.

The Penguin Lessons understood that.

He’s a symbol. But not the kind that gets turned into merch.

Juan Salvador (that’s his name) becomes the perfect performer in a fascist system: silent, obedient, soothing.

Everyone loves him.

But here’s the deeper cut:

He isn’t just a penguin. He’s a stand-in for the displaced—for Indigenous peoples, for Afro-descendants, for anyone "rescued" into captivity and paraded as proof of progress.

They clean him up. They smuggle him across borders. They put him in a blazer and watch as he becomes the school mascot. A curiosity. A comfort. An exotic they can control.

He performs peace while hiding the violence that brought him there. He soothes their nerves while never speaking a word.

He never gets his land back. Never sees the sea again. Never lives free.

Until he dies.

Offscreen.

Unremarked.

He just disappears.

Like Sofía. Like the others.

Like so many cultures deemed too wild, too foreign, too inconvenient to remember.

Like nuance.

It’s not just the soundtrack—it’s a ceremony. The vinyl crackles, the volume dips for a shout-out, and the entire block could hum that next hook before it even drops.

These weren’t just songs. They were rituals. They marked the end of long workdays, the start of weekend house parties, the quiet middle of a Sunday night bath. They filled the silence between generations when Daddy wouldn't say "I love you," but he'd turn up that Luther track just loud enough for you to feel it.

What follows is an elegy. Not for the artists, or the era—but for the songs themselves. These twenty tracks were all #1 R&B hits between 1978 and 1986. They weren’t fringe or obscure. And yet somehow, they’ve vanished. Not because they weren’t hits, but because time, tech, and tastemakers decided to delete the emotional hard drive we all used to share.

We don’t just lose music when that happens.
We lose memory.
We lose who we were when those songs knew us best.

Here’s our canon of the forgotten:

1. "I’m Every Woman" – Chaka Khan (1978)

The Black woman anthem before it got reinterpreted by Whitney. Radio used to live on this. It made every woman feel seen, heard, and center stage. You’d hear this in beauty salons, Sunday rides, and every ‘ladies night’ set—Chaka’s voice wrapped in confidence, thunder, and praise. It was feminism on wax before many dared say the word.

2. "Love T.K.O." – Teddy Pendergrass (1980)

Heartbreak you could two-step to. Teddy's voice used to close out every night. It didn’t just hurt—it held you in the pain until the next beat gave you hope. This was grown-man sorrow. The kind of loss you drink brown liquor to while staring out a window, understanding that some love stories are meant to bruise.

3. "Rock With You" – Michael Jackson (1980)

MJ at his silkiest. Once omnipresent, now a deep cut compared to his blockbuster hits. This was the slow dance MJ. The candlelight MJ. The don’t-even-need-words MJ. The breath between "Off the Wall" and the edge of superstardom, this groove felt like satin sheets and full moons.

4. "The Second Time Around" – Shalamar (1980)

Roller rink royalty. Jody Watley, Howard Hewett—they don’t make harmonies like this anymore. You didn’t even need to know the words. Your body already knew. Every couple skating in slow motion to this felt like they were starring in a music video directed by Black love itself.

5. "Just the Two of Us" – Grover Washington Jr. ft. Bill Withers (1981)

Bill Withers over jazz sax? This was grown-folk lullaby music. A love song wrapped in velvet, dipped in rain. It whispered commitment in a way that felt secure but never soft. Perfect for anniversaries and apologies that came from the chest.

6. "Give It To Me Baby" – Rick James (1981)

Before "Super Freak," this was the dance floor ignition. Freaky with funk but still sweet with bounce. Rick was the high priest of danger and groove—this track made hips move before minds could object. You knew it was on when this dropped at a house party.

7. "Shake You Down" – Gregory Abbott (1986)

Huge when it dropped. Now you might hear it in a dentist's office, if that. And yet it was once the background music for every confident, cologne-drenched brother on the scene. It was Black quiet storm sensuality—clean cut, low fade, and gold chain charm.

8. "Love You Down" – Ready for the World (1986)

Every slow jam tape had this. Quietly erased from the algorithm. This was a song you waited on during the countdown. That synth? That falsetto? Teenage lust on wax, but with enough groove for your mama to hum along (even if she pretended not to).

9. "Outstanding" – The Gap Band (1982)

Sampled a million times, but the original deserves resurrection. BBQ playlist essential. Now faded to memory. There was a moment in the '80s when this was the unofficial theme of Black joy. It didn’t matter who you were, when that bassline hit—you smiled.

10. "Juicy Fruit" – Mtume (1983)

Still iconic thanks to Biggie. But the original jam? Unplayed. This song invented sexual tension on FM radio. Mtume gave us coded heat. It was the sound of slow-drag confidence and knowing glances across a club floor.

11. "Be Thankful for What You Got" (re-record) – William DeVaughn (1979)

Used to open Sunday gospel sets. Now forgotten behind the ‘74 version. A Cadillac cruising prayer. You didn’t just listen to this—you rode with it. That message? Still hits: diamond in the back, sunroof top, dignity intact.

12. "She’s Strange" – Cameo (1984)

Cameo at their weirdest, funkiest peak. Deserves more than the occasional old-school mix. This one was for the girls with asymmetrical haircuts and men who wore mesh shirts with conviction. A celebration of every Black eccentric who made the block more colorful.

13. "Just Be Good to Me" – The S.O.S. Band (1983)

Every DJ set in the '80s had this. Barely a blip now. Synth gospel. Relationship confessionals before Instagram. It taught you that being in love didn’t mean being perfect. It meant showing up, staying real, and dancing through your doubt.

14. "Do Me Baby" – Prince (1982)

One of Prince’s most intimate ballads. Overshadowed by his own myth. This was bedroom royalty. Moans and high notes in perfect harmony. This was the track that taught a generation what tension felt like, not just what it sounded like.

15. "Operator" – Midnight Star (1984)

Electro-funk genius. You couldn’t escape it then, can’t find it now. Felt like the future at the time. Now it feels like it got left there. With robotic harmonies and funk-drenched keyboards, it was science fiction for the soul.

16. "Nightshift" – Commodores (1985)

A tribute to Marvin and Jackie Wilson that charted big—and quietly disappeared. Soul mourning soul. It was grief with groove. This was the first funeral track that made you sway. You didn’t cry. You rocked.

17. "Love Zone" – Billy Ocean (1986)

Silky, underrated. The kind of song you didn’t know you missed until it’s back. A midnight bath of synth and steam. It made monogamy sound like fantasy, and commitment feel like silk sheets.

18. "If Only You Knew" – Patti LaBelle (1983)

Pure gospel-R&B fusion. Used to define late-night quiet storm. Patti didn’t sing it. She testified. It was a sermon wrapped in satin. For every woman too proud to beg but too deep to let go.

19. "Yearning for Your Love" – The Gap Band (1981)

Slow funk with longing. Replaced in public memory by their uptempo hits. This one was for laying low and telling the truth. Every pause in this track was a confession. A plea in groove form.

20. "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" – The S.O.S. Band (1980)

Once an anthem. Now it’s like it never happened. The slow jam that masqueraded as uptempo groove. We all moved different when this came on. It was instruction, invitation, and liberation—all in one beat.
