“Early in the Morning” sounds like the hour after the damage. The party has ended, the room has gone quiet, and the adrenaline has drained from the body. Charlie Wilson sings from that uncomfortable place where movement can no longer protect you from memory.

“You Dropped a Bomb on Me” arrives with one of the most recognizable openings in funk history. The synthesizer howls, the explosion lands, and the bass line starts moving through the wreckage. The stream Major Watson Took The Oath Literally started with The Clash for a reason. Punk rock was never just volume, ripped shirts, bad manners, and young people screaming into cheap microphones. That is the lazy museum version, the one that turns a living refusal into a costume rack. Punk came out of economic wreckage, class anger, boredom, youth frustration, racial exchange, and the growing suspicion that official culture had become too polished to say anything true.

After Kashif, Evelyn “Champagne” King, and Whitney Houston opened the door, the desk moved into the Washington Post’s homepage games, Trump’s Iran threats, gas prices, possible war crimes in Iran, the Kennedy Center removing Trump’s name, Elon Musk’s trillionaire economy, the Karmelo Anthony verdict with Deuce Davis, Stephen A. Smith clapping back at Trump over the Knicks, the SPLC hearing, Jasmine Crockett, Graham Platner, and the mob that came for Lupita Nyong’o.

That was not random.

Music tells the truth before politics finishes lying.

The countdown songs were Evelyn “Champagne” King’s “I’m in Love” and “Love Come Down.” Both connect us to Kashif, born Michael Jones, one of the architects of the sound that carried Black music out of the disco era and into the sleek, electronic, post-disco R&B world of the 1980s.
