National Democrats wrote Mississippi off. Black organizers kept working. With the Senate race still uncalled, they’re fighting to get every valid ballot counted.
I hate video, too. I applaud this. And I appreciate your honesty. I'm also watching Mississippi like a hawk. Dear Lord, please let this be the start of a whole new way to live.
Rebecca, listen, readers like you are why I started this. You’ll have the whole piece to read here. And I want that “whole new way to live,” too. I keep thinking about the people in Mississippi who kept organizing after being written off. I’m watching right alongside ya, hoping they get to see what their work made possible.
I'm one of those who prefers the written word over video, so I appreciate your doing this. There is value in video, but it always appears more ad hoc and less carefully thought through than an essay. By following the transcript of a video (which I do a lot) you can see how an exchange between (or among) different parties can help an idea develop, but it's inferior to an essay.
I, too, prefer the written word over video. I actually get bored with it quickly and chop it into segments with breaks. As you say, it has its place or value but truly can't replace the written word.
Video has its unique strengths, and I watch it for some things, but for the most part I stick to print. Old dog syndrome? Maybe., but yes, it does not supersede the written word. I think that part of how we got stuck with Trump has to do with (in my opinion) less mind engagement and greater passivity in "watching" over reading, and certainly observing.
You have a really good point there J.L. Propagandists don’t write books (or at least good ones for that matter) they burn them. Propagandists do however have an obsession with the moving image an if I’m not mistaken it was the propaganda arm of the Bolsheviks that really developed film theory as we know it today.
"Some of those slick presentations bring to mind James Brown’s “Talkin’ Loud and Sayin’ Nothing.” Only you, X. This is why I subscribe to you. Everybody's doin' it, doin' it, doin it, pickin' their nose and chewin' it, chewin' it. I am NOT a trend follower myself, but I was one of the cool kids (why, I will never know), and I can tell you it was not fun. I went out of my way to know and say "hi" to every single person in my high school class of 317 students. WHY? Cuz I didn't want anyone to think I was stuck up. Now? I don't give a fuck, and maybe you shouldn't either. You are the real deal. PLEASE stay that way. Don't make yourself miserable because a) people want to multi-task and do other things while they listen (and miss half of what you say) b) they can't be bothered to look at the words on the page or c) they have a visual problem and can only listen (those people can't see all the fake studio shit, anyway). Go, Xplisset! And Goooooo, Mississippi! Elect Scott Colom and change the South!!!!!
Lies and slight-of-hand are nothing new in politics, but I think in my lifetime that has been a trend toward mass marketing things that require more personal consideration and contact; government of, by and for the people top of the list. I'm inundated with pleas fro political cash, but see little coming from those organizations that (it seems to me) addresses me as a human being; not personally of course, there are way too many of us to do that, but as a sentient being addressed heart to heart. A lot of it seems like gimmicks to lure in disembodied "eyeballs". An impersonal sales pitch.
Not here, of course, and not always, but it seems to me that while some form of sales pitch may be necessary, it is critically necessary for we as a political party and we, as a culture, need to find better was to let people be seen, and in fact be seen, even though addressing massive numbers. I think there are people who can do that. I think we may be seeing that shift, if we run with it.
