I'm a retired Naval Officer. White. My dad was a Marine Infantry Officer. I know it was hard for me. He never gave me any advice. I can't imagine how difficult it will be for her, but I think the advice from Mom is sound. I'm so glad she received it from such an authority. I have complete faith and confidence in her. 💛🫡
Sarge, I just finished my second read of this post. I have zero exposure to Black culture. I had one Black classmate for 1 semester in 12 years in the public school system in Medford, OR. There were a few Black students at Southern Oregon State College, none of them in my major (Criminology). In the 30+ years I was associated with the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, I worked with 3 Black deputies.
I use this as preface to say that this post demands attention and consideration across the board.
The first thing that came to mind was Serena Williams having such a difficult time getting her medical team to listen to her when she knew she had some complications with her pregnancy and delivery of one of her children.
Thank you for writing this post (and all the others).
Inconvenient, uncomfortable, but if we tune out these brave, earnest Command Performances, we are doomed to perpetual civil war. I'm all for a heavy dose of uncomfortable reality if it prevents suffering and neglect.
Mary Church Terrell is all but forgotten as a suffragist and a civil rights leader. Her writings are powerful. Frederick Douglas called for a woman's right to vote before the white suffragists did.
I listen to Auntie Bev everyday on Insta and YouTube and it’s especially good right now during Black History Month. Everyone needs to know her and listen to the education she provides. An amazing black woman please everyone check it out(also featured on an NPR story recently). Positive energy is out there.
Amen to all of this - every bit! Thank you for the piece and laying it out so insightfully. And so important for everyone to hear and absorb as we continue to drive that change with real truths, even if people find them uncomfortable.
I’m grateful I don’t read you for comfort. Truth cuts deep.

Thank you,thank you,thank you. I am white and 83 years old,but I am learning.
White, 65, and learning. Ears wide open.
I believe that's why we are known to be older and wiser, right???

It doesn't matter whether they are African, Asian, European or Middle Eastern; we men don't listen to women period.
Women bring life to the world and we destroy it.
Say it loud!

I've often thought that you and Dr. Stacey Patton together could produce an awesome podcast. This article convinced me of it.

Wow! WELL WORTH the subscription price. Thank you!!
Yes! I hear you. Thank you. There is so much here to read, and re-read.
Thank you - for more information and some education - maybe a little understanding - a little.
Appreciate it
We don’t. I think a big reason Donald Trump is president of the United States is Black men.

Thanks! Powerful message, as always.
